Initially Bertrand Russell was a fan of the Bolshevik Revolution. He went to Russia and talked with Lenin fairly extensively. He wasn't impressed and over time came to disapprove of Marx-Lenninism though not of socialism because he said that Marxism was a philosophy founded on hate. Marx essentially hated the bourgeoisie and that was the basis for his philosophy. He contrasted Marx's socialism with John Stuart Mills' which he considered superior because it was based on a genuine desire to improve the lives of most people. I think much of our politics now derives more from Marx's motives than from Mills'.
