That shows the beauty of high school XC team racing. While I don’t recall all the specifics of my races, I do remember being that fifth place guy on the team, and I worked hard to get myself to that position. My team wasn’t that good so we weren’t competing for state championships or anything, but we did have a couple of good young runners who I’m sure harbored some disappointment that the back end of their team didn’t help out a little more, but I never felt it from those guys. They were a great bunch of . . . I’m not even sure what to call them, we were like a bunch of miss fits. All I know is that I ran as hard as I could and those top guys were never anything but supportive. (I was two years older and admittedly one of the cooler kids on the team - haha - so that may have helped.) I just hope this fifth place kid on the Boston College High team is stilling enjoying the experience.
