Oh my Kevin this is just absolutely beautiful. Weeping, congratulations! You have reminded many of the beauty we must all hold dear...grateful, humble.
Dogs truly are the best friends but are even better teachers. My bichon, Jasper, is turning 16 this year, due to cataracts he is 95% blind and has terrible arthritis in his hips(have been thinking of getting him one of those wheeled carts but I don't mind carrying him around the neighborhood when the going gets too rough for him). He's been there for me for 14 years and has taught be a lot, most important thing he's taught me is to just enjoy sitting in the sun, his absolute favorite thing to do in the summer; there is no better smell in the world than his fur after he's been sitting in the sun.
My husband and I had a shepherd mix who looked a lot like Rosie, especially his facial coloring. Bigger, though - part Rotty we think, though we found him wandering around in farm country with a broken jaw and no sign of ownership, so we can't be sure. He was with us for I think 17 years, and ran many, many miles with us. My husband and I usually ran separately after having kids, so in his prime he got two runs a day. That eventually tailed off to shorter, slower runs and then walks and then very, very slow short walks, and I had to carry him home from his last walk. Sad to think about as he is gone now.

Wonderful piece. Dogs are always training us in manners, but some people don't recognize the subtle language of courtesy.
