I ran better as a senior at nationals. Unfortunately, Suzy was out with an injury that year, so she was unable to run the qualifying race In Wisconsin. She did come out to cheer everybody on, though. She has always been such a sweetheart in that way, supporting others, no matter what she’s dealing with.

Because she was out in 1984, there was no easy way to visually demonstrate the basic reason the two of you became close. I didn't even know that she had come to the house!

I'm glad she had her best years when she did, even if that meant continually losing 1,500-meter titles to Roidgina Jacobs. I think that given her psychological vicissitudes that her career would have teaken a dent had social media been a phenomenon in the 1990s. She was one of the first elite runners with a website.

I didn't keep scrapbooks but did look forward to my monthly Runner's World magazine to enthrall me with articles about Bill Rogers and Greta Waitz!

Note that running journalism hasn't evolved much.... In the Mary Decker Tabb piece it is written, "No other American woman's distance runner ever has been so versatile and so good."

That is good enough for senior editor at Outside Mag!
