I think the media is realizing it's smarter to be heard and angry, even if they are wrong. Eyeballs matter. The world is crowded with too many papers and outlets and too few eyeballs. That is why everything is click-baity.
Also I think certain instarunners of certain demographics are big and powerful runners even if their times aren't solid compared to the truly elite. It's about building a brand (think Emily Abbate and Ali on the Run) and influence.
RW has always been a joke. In the pre-times(No internet, that is) I read Running Times and even better(in its brief lifetime) was a Nike sponsored rag simply called "Running." It really was well done. As far as breathing goes,I always figured to open my big mouth as wide as possible, breathe in the maximum volume I can and exhale as much hot air as I am capable of. I do that well already. Can't improve on perfection! Cheers.
I will say not all media outlets are bad. Some, like Laura McGreen's blog, are funny and she at least recognizes she's in a good, privileged position. That's the first step to awareness.
Wait, the “Should I be double-masking when I run” was a real story? JFC
There were also numerous complaints about Choi being followed by his "crew" that were taping
him while on electric bikes, apparently getting in the way of other runners and further violating race ethics and rules
