We can play with both the overall pace of tempo runs and their within-run progression. So how fast is too fast for a tempo run, and how much threshold-like training is too much?
If you still have the text to your deleted pieces from Runners World, would be great to see all of them in one place. Not sure if substack can host such a collection, but I'd read them.
What I would love to see, if you still have in your archives, is your full race report from your PR at Boston in 2001. I know you’ve mentioned portions of that race recently, but I would love to read that whole write-up again. I read the original version but unfortunately didn’t keep it. Two things I remember, both pertaining to your pit stop near Cleveland Circle, was how you emerged from the port-o-john to thunderous applause, “trailing toilet paper as if it were Superman’s cape.” (I’m paraphrasing here which is why I’d love to see your original description.) Then you proceeded to pass, for a second time, the same elite runner from South Africa who you had recently passed. He was surprised because he didn’t see you duck into the john.
