Absolutely wonderful article, as a child of the "70's the music of my youth was album's of content from song to song weaving a story that held together like a book.

Your picks are brilliant...of course my addition would be Talking Heads-Speaking in Tongues, Paul Simon-Graceland, Doors-The Doors, Eric Clapton, Beatles-White Album....so many. Thank you!

I don't know nearly as much about rock music as you do, but your Led Zeppelin, The Who and Dire Straits choices would be on my list, too. Springsteen's Born to Run would be on the list too, as well as John Hiatt's Slow Turning. But looking over my music collection just now, I realize that most albums have just one or two songs really memorable songs that I like. By the way, the line I most agree with in your piece: "Mark Knopfler is simply a virtuoso."

I'm fine with your list, but it prompted me to come up with one of my own. As much as I wanted to find a way to add Beck, Muse, Fiona Apple, TV on the Radio, and a bunch of other artists to my list, I ended up with the list below. It's not as easy as it seems to pick an entire album, not a band or a bunch of songs by one artist.

Coldplay - Parachutes (an embarrassing pick, but their first two albums were actually pretty good)

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair

Led Zeppelin - IV

Joe Jackson -Look Sharp

The Verve - Urban Hymns

The Czars - Goodbye

Arcade Fire - Funeral

Radiohead - OK Computer (tie) Amnesiac (I'm cheating)

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
