Good read, as is the Podium Runner article linked. I like the idea of the 3 week blocks; but is there some more information to explain how the workouts would progress, throughout the 4x to 5x three-week block? Do the interval sessions, FFs, marathon pace runs, tempo runs etc. get progressively longer/more challenging; or is block one identical to block five (for example)?

The 3 week cycles along with the longer marathon pace runs truly inform you of what the given pace per mile should be. I'd say as close as 5 seconds a mile for the marathon.

How it doesn't work is someone plugs in their 8k or half marathon race times into the calculator and it spits out the pace needed for the goal time. Unless you have trained with the long pace runs (and of course the other elements) then it is difficult.

I have had multiple conversations about the 20k, 25k, and 30k marathon pace runs and the utility behind them and most times what I hear is I'm not doing that!

On a side note and I totally get the idea behind this is runners want to race their way to the marathon. They schedule races in the 10 mile to 13.11 distance and let fly. Trust me, this is a lot more fun then pounding out a solo 30k pace run on the track, but those won't help program your body with the functions needed to meet your goal time.
