I have found that my stride rate has not changed as I got older and slower. My cadence was above 190 when I was 50 years old and running sub 6 minutes per mile and now when I am 73 years old and running 10 minutes per mile it still remains above 190. This is also true when comparing my racing cadence to my training cadence: I ran a 10 mile race on 11/2/2019 in 1:27:10 (8:41 pace) with a cadence of 197 spm; this morning I ran a 8 mile training run in 1:20 (10 minute pace} with a cadence of 195 spm. ( Interestingly, I ran a 5K race in 9/14/2019 in 26:12 (8;28 pace) with a cadence of 194 spm.) My cadence remains very consistent even at a much slower pace: yesterday I ran 7.28 miles at 11:47 pace with a 192 cadence.

What is the difference between cadence and stride rate? They seem to be used interchangeably. But you said - “what almost always visibly fails first is cadence, rather than stride rate” and this confuses me.
