A single observation is just an anecdote. But based on seeing how my wife bounced back from her two pregnancies, the article didn't surprise me.

My wife certainly wasn't world class, but she was nationally ranked in South Africa and competed in numerous national championships there, in cross country and on the roads (and on the track before I met her). In fact, the only reason we happened to meet is we were both selected to run for our province in an interprovincial cross country meet. (Although we both selected on several occasions before and after that, it was the only time we were on a team together.)

We don't have an objective way to compare before and after training or performances, because my wife didn't keep a running log. We can't even compare results in the same races before and after because we moved from South Africa to Seatle, WA, when our son was 2 and then to Australia when our daughter was still just 1. However, my wife did run on the Tasmanian team in the Australian national cross country championships in her late 30s and set a marathon PR in winning the masters division of the Country Music Marathon, in Nashville, TN, in 2001 when she was 42.
