1) I am religious but never judge those who aren't. My brother is an athiest and my father is Jewish. I'm accepting of all faiths and belief systems. I think you are 100% right about Ottman using faith to center him--it works for him.

2) Interesting point about guys and gals off the OT standard just not trying hard enough at 70-80 mpw. Some may have issues with injuries but some really just do it for the Strava kudos!

"I have stressed here that two major ways local runners with the talent to reach the Olympic Trials in the marathon wind up falling short are failing to train like marathoners and getting too involved with groups of people who—while fun to run and drink beer and trade elite gossip with—just aren't the best training partners. Group settings of this type tend to be suboptimal for everyone in the group who winds up altering their training, usually unconsciously, in ways that don't help."

In Columbus there are running groups like this--guys and girls who are faster than the general population but not good enough to hit the OT standard. I'm far beneath even them but I see 100% what you mean--they run well (one guy I know runs 14:50/31/1:09/2:24 and is very good, the exception) but most of them see it as a social thing--which is fine but you can't have it both ways really. Scads of 2:30-2:50 guys and 2:45-3:15 girls....I'm a 3:20 guy so obviously slower than them but I also know for me it's just a way to lose weight. I have no chance of actually running 2:50 lol
