Here in New England, not known for its warm greetings generally, the unwritten code among runners always seemed to be a friendly acknowledgment of some sort as you passed, a nod of the head, a brief hello, or a wave of the hand. I always thought it strange that bikers would never say hi. They seemed irritated when they encountered us (especially the ones we runners we would pass occasionally on the sharp uphills!). But anyway, thanks for all the great posts this past year. I’m either reading more or you’re writing more. And you’re one of the few still going through the year-end holidays. I’m not sure I’m looking forward to the coming year, but as long as we keep getting your take on things, it’ll help.

Happy New Year Kevin.

In this part of the world some runners and walkers smile, wave, or actually manage a greeting while others don't, even when I greet them first. I haven't been able to discern a pattern (though each particular individual seems to be consistent from one occasion to the next).

Oh god, the loose jointed elbow...I always know not to even try saying hello to that. Although, my nose is always dripping when I’m running, so maybe that’s why people don’t often smile at me--they’re afraid I have Covid.

Happy New Year, Kevin. Try not to get too distracted by the hot nurses when it’s icy out. :)
