I used to see Tom running the Oak Hill trails in East Concord. Whenever we crossed paths, he always smiled and was friendly to both me and my dog. I called him "Coach" because by the time I'd remember his name, he was long gone.
It's a convenient word to wheeze -- one syllable, hard to mispronounce.
If every runner was like him, there would be three times more of us, But most would be hurt half the time because we'd all be racing each other on random training runs.
It's a loss for the community and for his family. But at least it offers chance to remember how many great influences I've had and how many are still out there.
